I am a retired ObGyn and medical historian who has collected books and instruments for over 40 years. Age and downsizing have prompted me to pass along my items to younger collectors with the space to display them. As time permits, I will be listing approximately 300 books and over 100 instruments on eBay. This is a Hodge Obstetric Forceps. It is a nickel-plated steel instrument stamped "New York Surgical Instrument Company". Its date of manufacture is unknown, but likely late 19thC, since Hodge's design was made public by Harris in 1872, and it was likely not used much after 1900. It measures ~ 16" in length and weighs ~ 1 lb 6 oz. As you can see from the photos, it shows some wear with small areas of plating flaked off, and light rust. Overall in good condition for its age. Hugh Lenox Hodge (1796-1873) was Chair of ObGyn at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), fromm 1835 until his death. With Meigs, at Jefferson College, he was the most influential American Obstetrician of his time; he wrote the most important American obstetric textbook of the 19thC. Today he might be better known for his pessary, used to correct uterovaginal prolapse and retroversion of the uterus. Hodge's obstetric practice was much influenced by that of his predecessor, Dewees who, in turn followed the Frenchman, Baudelocque. Hodge modified Baudelocque's long forceps in subtle ways, replacing the French lock with a more practical German one.
